Millimeter-wave radar technology utilizes electromagnetic waves to detect and analyze the motion, position, and speed of targets through Doppler effect. Known for its high penetration and anti-interference capabilities, this technology is particularly suited for human presence detection, motion tracking, and health monitoring. The MS72SF1, a 60GHz ultra-low power radar module from MinewSemi, offers high-precision detection, effectively monitoring personnel presence, movement trajectories, and even micro-movements. It's ideal for applications in smart homes, security surveillance, and healthcare.

This guide provides step-by-step instructions on installing, configuring, debugging, and demonstrating the MS72SF1 for human presence detection, including real-time tracking of multiple targets, their distances, and stationary distances.

1. Demo Setup for Human Detection Radar

01. Hardware Components

The hardware setup includes the MS72SF1 radar module, a USB-to-TTL module, a USB extension cable, and an optional Bluetooth module for wireless data transmission.

02. Download Software and Documentation

Before starting, download the MS72SF1 software and related documentation. Contact minewsemi@minew.com for assistance or visit the MinewSemi website for more product information: MinewSemi MS72SF1.

GNDGND

The wiring method between the MS50SFA module and the TTL to serial port is as follows:

04. Module Installation

The MS72SF1 supports both ceiling and wall mounting. Recommended installation height is 3 meters, with:

· Maximum stationary detection radius: 3 meters

· Maximum moving detection radius: 5 meters

· Maximum movement distance when wall-mounted: 6 meters

· Detection angle: ±60° in both horizontal and vertical directions

05. Configuration Tutorial

Once connections are made, connect the serial tool to your computer and open the SSCOM serial software. Follow these steps to view data:

1. Power the radar module using 3.3V from the USB-to-TTL adapter and open Radar_DemoSideMount.exe. Set to HEX data mode (AT+DEBUG=3).

2. Select the appropriate port for the radar module.

3. Set the baud rate to 115200.

4. Enable HEX display.

5. After configuration, open the serial port.

Successful configuration will return AT+OK; a failure will return Save Para Fail, indicating the need to resend commands.

06. Overview of the Host Software

Once the radar data is configured, open the radar host software to see the radar output data in real-time.

2. Functionality Demonstration and Application Scenarios

1. Radar Module Features:

· Tracks up to 10 targets simultaneously, including movement trajectories and real-time positions.

· Highly sensitive to micro-movement detection (e.g., stationary, swaying, waving).

2. Application Scenarios:

The MS72SF1 millimeter-wave radar is extensively used in smart homes, security monitoring, personnel counting, and object tracking. It precisely detects human and object movements, positions, and speeds, enabling automated control and intelligent management. For instance, in smart home applications, it can automate functions for security, lighting, and climate control, enhancing comfort and convenience. It can also detect household items (like furniture, appliances, and pets), allowing for automated energy efficiency by shutting down devices when no one is home.
